Three problems we will face in the future

There are three problems we will face in the future--food shortage, population bomb and the gaps between the rich and the poor.

First, let me talk about food shortage.

There is no sign that the decrease of human population.

We need more and more food to feed people, however, many of us have difficulties getting sufficient amount of food today, because of climate changes, global warming, and devastated environment.

We cannot meet the food demand even today.

Second, people live longer than ever with the development of medicine.

The problem is that older people need more help than the youth.

They become sick or injured more easily than youngsters and it takes longer to cure.

At the same time, in many cases they have chronicle diseases.

Also, in developing nations, more and more children are born.

Population bomb is ticking now.

Governments’ financial burdens will become heavier and heavier.

Finally, the gap between the rich and the poor is getting wider.

Some economists pointed out that 80% of human fortune all over the world is in the hand of 10 per cent of people.

A handful of rich people spend the money poor people earn in longer than 100 years.

I am afraid that the three problems we will face in the future are lack of food, too many people, and the widen gap between the haves and the have-nots.

Electronic dictionaries are more useful in studying than printed dictionaries.

Electronic dictionaries are more useful in studying than printed dictionaries for the following three reasons.

First, electronic dictionaries are lighter to carry than printed dictionaries.

In Japan, pupils and students often carry heavy bags filled with heavy textbooks and dictionaries on the way to school--sometimes as heavy as ten kilograms or heavier.

These bags are too heavy for growing youngsters and have terrible influence on these growing kids.

Second, electronic dictionaries contain the contents of many printed dictionaries.

For instance, my dictionary has two English-Japanese, one Japanese-English, several English-English dictionaries and encyclopedia as well.

Suppose you carry these dictionaries in the printed versions, how heavy they will be.

I think it makes study easier and comfortable.

Finally, electronic dictionaries can make sounds. In studying English, leaning pronunciation is very important.

However, many of us do not have any model English speakers around us.

Most electronic dictionaries tell us how to pronounce words correctly.

As we have seen, electronic dictionaries have more advantages to students than printed ones in studying for the reasons mentioned above.

I conclude that the Japanese people waste too much water.

I think we should think more about people who cannot have enough drinkable water.

Next, Then, Second, Secondly

Second, we do not see the importance of having a lot of drinkable water.

For instance, many people throw away water when they felt satisfied.

In zoos, amusement parks and any other places, we see children have plastic bottles in which there is clean water.

When they played around enjoying a lot of games and plays, they will go back.

I was shocked to see them throw away the plastic bottles in which there was some water.

They may think they had enough.

But I am afraid that we should know better than to throw away usable water.

I have two reasons to support the idea.

First, we use clean tap water to wash our cars or other things.

In Japan, we have clean drinkable water from the tap.

We do not distinguish clean drinkable water from not so clean water.

We drink tap water and use the same tap water to clean machines and cars.

In many parts of the world, a lot of people do not have enough water to drink.

Do you think the Japanese waste too much water?

このとき、Yes, I do. または No, I don't.

Yes, I think the Japanese waste too much water. とか No, I don't think they use too much water.

これも For example, ...

I have two reasons why I think so. とか、There are two reasons why I do not agree with the idea.

Agree or Disagree; the Internet Should Be Censored

I think that the Internet censorship is necessary for the following three reasons.

First, the internet censorship can prevent youngsters from accessing unsuitable websites, containing such as pornography, violent scenes, and so on.

It is impossible for ordinary citizens like us to examine the contents of websites, and judge whether they are good or not.

Censorship by experts is the only way to reduce the number of these terrible sites.

Second, the Internet provides criminals an ideal means of communication.

Under the cover of anonymity, they can exchange information about crime plans, such as robberies, murders and so on.

If the government introduces Internet censorship, these criminals may withdraw from the online world.

Finally, the Internet censorship can protect people from terrible traps.

Everyday through the Internet, we receive a lot of spam mail inviting us to join suspicious groups or engage in risky business. The Internet censorship by the police or experts can reduce these kinds of spam.

I believe that there are a lot of risks on the Internet and it should be censored carefully.

Then we can enjoy the Internet more.

Are wars ever justified?

Are wars ever justified?

There are some cases we can justify wars--first, to protect our people, second, to protect our land and finally, to protect our fortune.

Let me explain.

First, each nation should protect its people.

When another country send its army to the land and begins to kill people, it should be accepted for the government to fight against the invaders.

Imagine when someone came into your house and try to kill your family members.

No law will prevent you from protecting yourself and your wife, children, and relatives.

Therefore, the war to protect your people should be justified.

Second, without land, we cannot sustain our lives.

When someone occupies your place and lock you out of your place, you can attack that person and regain your land.

This is the second case wars should be justified.

Finally, you have right to ask other nations for help in case that thieves take your money, treasure and other fortunes.

No one has good reason to take your fortune.

Justice is on your side.

To keep thieves away from your land, you can protect yourself with weapons and soldiers.

Self-protection should be justified.

As I mentioned above, there are wars which should be justified in case that someone tries to take your life, land and fortune.

How should we prevent an epidemic?

How should we prevent an epidemic?

There are two big strategies to protect ourselves from an epidemic of diseases--first, medical care, and second, education.

First, when we find out a new disease or the disease which we thought we destroyed began to spread many people, we have to send specialists and medicine to keep it within an area.

We need experts of the disease, special things which are required to cure the patients, and hospitals to keep victimized people.

We have to exchange and share the information.

World co-operation among nations is necessary to prevent an epidemic.

Second, in a larger sense, however, education is necessary.

Even though we send experts to cure the patients, people in the epidemic area do not have sufficient amount of knowledge, they misunderstand our efforts and bother us.

For instance, when people had an attack of fever, local people believed it was caused by some religious reason and made a raid upon hospitals.

As a result, patients with critical condition were taken away.

As I mentioned above, when we have an attack of an epidemic, we need medical care.

But in a larger sense, people should have some medical knowledge.

Disappearing Japanese Tradition

Disapprearing Japanese Tradition

Recently, I have come across an interesting article about our tradition written by an American.

Let me tell you the outline of the article.

This is about the gorgeous pictures of public baths.

If you have been to a public bath, you know on the background, we have a big picture describing Mt. Fuji.

For most Japanese, this is nothing unique.

But for visitors to Japan, this is an interesting feature.

Here is a mania of these pictures.

He asked some public bath owners, and learned a lot about the history of public baths and their pictures.

According to him, this tradition started almost 100 years ago.

At that time, there were more than 2000 public baths in and around Tokyo.

One owner wished to attract more children, so he decided to draw a picture in his bath.

Then, it got success and as a result, the picture of Mt. Fuji spread all around Tokyo.

He told the writer that what's most important when painting a picture in a bath is speed.

A painter has to start painting after the bath is closed and manage to finish it before the bath opens.

The painter has only a few hours to complete the painting.

The number of these professional painters is decreasing now, because we do not have many public baths.

In fact, today, there are only 600 public baths around Tokyo now.

He says we have to put our heads together and think about what we should do to maintain our tradition--a public bath with a wonderful picture of Mt. Fuji.
